"So was I once myself a swinger of birches. And so I dream of going back to be. It's when I'm weary of considerations, And life is too much like a pathless wood..." -Robert Frost
I tend to avoid talking about the process of taking my pictures, because the tripod, self-timer, and difficulty involved, tends to take the romanticism out of the final product. However, I have to say: this set has been one of the most difficult and most rewarding so far. I literally had to climb this tree in ten seconds and more than a dozen times. Needless to say, there were many images of me awkwardly mid-climb with my butt up in the air...
Here are my newish eyeglasses again (technically I've had them for a couple of months now). I have gotten so used to my contacts that I forgot how inconvenient eyeglasses can be: they fog up in the cold, offer no protection from the sun, etc, etc. Still, I like wearing my glasses every now and then.
Also, I think I should hunt down more leather garments. I stumbled across this one in a local thrift shop for $5 and almost passed it up because leather isn't my typical style...I tend to feel like a poser in athletic gear and "tough girl" clothes, like leather. However, the fact it was mustard yellow softened it up enough for me. Now, I really like it and I feel rather powerful (?) in it. As if there's a certain attitude associated with a leather pencil skirt that one can acquire merely by donning the piece. Who knows? Now, I'm on the search for the perfect leather shorts. I might not feel quite ready for the look, but one only grows by trying things out.
Barbro Anderson is a Norwegian blogger with cheekbones that could cut glass. She describes her style as "romantic rocker meets elegance with a pinch of emotional diva" and after only seeing a few of her outfits, I was hooked on her blog. I really admire all the pictures she takes outside in the cold and snow (I know how uncomfortable that can be!) and her darkly chic outfits. In order to get to know Barbro better, I had her plan a dream party complete with A-list guests. What type of party is it? It’s this amazing, once in a life time event, with a totally mesh vibe. Everyone has a great time, makes new friends and doesn’t want to leave. There are hundreds of pillows, cashmere blankets and the most comfortable couches you’ve ever sat on, my favorite beer and red wine, games such as spin the style-switch-bottle and wonderful music throughout the night. There are no language barriers, and there is a somewhat hippie-feel to the whole party. Who is invited? I’d invite a sober Johnny Cash so that he could play me those wonderful songs of his, Christian Louboutin with no further explanation, Audrey Hepburn so that could talk about that little black dress and have breakfast at Tiffany’s, Captain Jack Sparrow for make-up advice, Kate Moss so that I could steal her outfit and lock her in a closet for keeps and Snow White for some insider tips on how to get such beautiful skin. Of course, my fellow and favorite bloggers, including my lover. Where does it take place? It’s a custom made palace, or castle, in a magic place similar to Dubai without discriminating laws, placed in Eastern Europe. It’s in this squared mini-maze with a lovely garden in the middle, sky-high fences covered in tropical flowers. It’s like something out of an old movie; with oversized chandeliers, giant staircases, candles burning everywhere, long dining tables with all of those confusing forks and spoons which we happily ignore. What are we eating? Anything spicy and tasty, fresh and exciting! A hundred different tapas-versions, dressings and dips, vegan spring rolls, chicken-nachos, tacos, cheese platters with mozzarella sticks, stuffed tomatoes, baked potatoes, Greek salads, Spanish salads, Norwegian salads. Healthy and unhealthy, a lovely mix of all of the great things in life. Also, there would be a lot of coffee. Who gets to sit next to you? I mingle a lot at parties, despite my shyness, so I’ll probably sit next to everyone during the party. What are the hot topics of the evening? The best things in life. Is there a special entertainment/playlist/band/fireworks? When you first arrived, there are blank pieces of paper on which you could write your favorite band, put in an enchanted jar and...woops! They would magically appear on a stage throughout the evening. What is the theme or what is everyone wearing? Glamour-fusion and contemporary beauty. Everyone would wear something extraordinary, personal, yet comfortable. Are there party favors? Of course! Some rich uncle in Canada sent twenty-three cameras for every year I’ve lived with unlimited capacity. The best party favor, though, is that no one would get a hangover. As a treat, and a farewell gift, everyone would get a secret map that unveils the best vintage shops in the whole wide world. Who is most likely to get drunk and dance on the table? Audrey, Kate and I. But, as we obviously set a good example, the question should probably be; who wouldn’t? Who is the last to leave? Johnny Cash, not so sober. For more of Barbro visit her blog.
"Frequently the woods are pink, Frequently are brown; Frequently the hills undress Behind my native town." -Emily DickinsonThis ring is fist-pumping goodness; I really don't think I could have designed myself a more perfect ring. I've been looking for the perfect double finger ring, but I never imagined I would find one with whimsical birds perched atop (and it is adjustable). I found it at Old Gold Boutique, which I discovered on the lovely blog Our Paper Moon and I'm quite addicted to a number of the rings they offer.
I feel a bit "dance" inspired in this outfit; like a ballerina off-duty? It is probably the shoes, which are a real chore to put on!
Ah, these shoes: I bought them on a sale at a Zara in Germany. A friend and I hopped over there in December one long weekend during our semester in Greece, for the Christmas markets. Neither of us were quite expecting how cold it was in Germany compared to Athens and we ended up freezing most of the time. Our solution was to seek shelter in various stores while we explored new cities. You know, visit a breezy castle then hunt down some shop with central heat to recover inside; admire a cathedral, stop for a hot bite to eat, etc. Thus, we stumbled into Zara one crisp evening with red noses and purple toes and I discovered these shoes. They were on sale and my friend was very enthusiastic as to my need for them. Yes, I travel with enablers. Unfortunately, the number of times I have worn them since then can be counted on one hand. Which isn't to say I regret purchasing them; after all the worth of some items lies in the memories they hold.
If you see a recurring theme about memories on my blog and my dependence upon objects and pictures to keep them alive, it might be because this is a minor obsession of mine. I don't really depend upon my head being able to maintain accurate recollection of the past; frankly I distrust my mental ability to remember. With tokens and images frozen in time I do hope to delay my imminent amnesia...
Whenever I wear jeans it is the opposite of a "throw it on a go" wardrobe choice. I intentionally wear them on days when an activity calls for them or I want to feel a little anonymous or normal. I find it much more easy and comfortable to fling a dress on and trot out the door. However, I've worn jeans a couple of times lately and I thought I would do a little showcase of atypical style for me.
Also, I've been experimenting with braids lately...it is definitely a learning process; I think I should invest in some hair product like spray or gel to help me keep them intact! My daily hair process is to air dry and then brush it...really lazy. I really like this style, but it felt a little too saccharine to wear it with a dress. Although, by the time summer rolls around I'll probably be comfortable looking Heidi-esque. I'm quite ready for summer too, it felt like spring on this particular day and I swear it was the first time I saw the sun in weeks. My outfit pictures from last week and even Monday were taken either in a brief break from rain, or while getting rained on!
I don't go out often, but here's a typical "night out" look for those times that I do. Miniature heels or flats are a must because I love to dance and I'd rather be comfortable with a dash of sparkle than over-the-top. I've been told I dance well and I've been told I dance like a Charlie Brown character and I'm still trying to figure out if those are mutually exclusive!
Hi! Welcome to my dusty, wee corner of the Internet. What started as a fashion blog has now become a window into the wild and a way to share a moment of calm and quiet.
