Simply Passing Through Paris

Paris Sous La Pluie
On a rainy day here in Paris my sister and I spent most of our time in our borrowed apartment escaping the bad weather. It was actually a pleasant little breather, as I have been tourist-ing nonstop in Paris. Every day has been a long and lovely walk to some interesting destination and then an equally long walk back. After awhile, as much as you enjoy seeing new things, you just want to put your feet up and eat some macarons.
I took these pictures using my tripod in the stairwell and hallway outside of our apartment. It's a dark, narrow little space so it was quite difficult to get images I was satisfied with, especially as I quite dislike pictures taken indoors in general. Still, the outfit is Proenza Schouler inspired, so I thought I would share my slightly Gothic, school girl outfit.

Pere Lachaise Cemetery
My sister and I spent a some time getting lost in the Pere Lachaise Cemetery. We did not literally lose our way, but in that maze it could easily have happened (especially if I had ventured there alone). Although, the Pere Lachaise is reported to be the most visited cemetery in the world, on this particular day it was a very quiet space in the bustling city. A cold wind whipped between the tombstones and brown leaves rustled beneath our feet, making it seem as if fall is truly on its way.

Reflecting On Ocean Voyages
No plans to spend your dreary winter days at a cabin in the woods? No worries, you can travel there vicariously through Family Affairs' new Fall/Winter 2010 lookbook. The collection feels a bit like a gothic romance and as always, the descriptions Family Affairs gives their items are better than my own imaginings. "The heroine is holed up in a mountain house made of wood--Sitting at the kitchen table with a fire going, tea and cake and a fat cat by her side, reflecting on the ocean voyages she’s taken and enjoying the peace and beauty of being in nature." Her adventures name the pieces of the collection and make you want to be the sort of girl who belongs in them.
P.S. Their upcoming new collection, also means many of their current pieces are now on sale!

Paris When It Sizzles
As the temperatures rise here in Paris it becomes increasingly apparent while those Parisians with the means escape this city in August. Hot air rising to our top-floor apartment (no elevator, ahem) drives us to the slightly cooler outdoors even after a day of exhaustive sightseeing. Luckily, there are a number of parks to temporarily escape to; complete with street vendors and oh-so-refreshing ice cream. I took these pictures at the park near us which is complete with psuedo ruins, man-made waterfalls, and numerous twisting paths.
I've been very strict in my purchases so far in Europe; I've been here for more than three weeks and I can count all the non-food/travel purchases on one hand. This dress, these flats, and the new nail polish are among those few and far between purchases. The shoes are a nice break from my other pairs, although the studs are quite noisy--preventing me from being the French spy I was clearly born to be...

Living Out Of A Suitcase Remixes
As you have probably noticed: I finished my three weeks in the UK and just started my time here in Paris (which also means my trip is halfway through). Living out of a suitcase for six weeks is not my idea of fun, but traveling is what I love so I'll endure a lot of mildly uncomfortable situations in order to see new places (just ask me about the six flights of stairs I have to climb every day to reach our borrowed apartment). The key to packing light is a willingness to re-wear pieces again and again--I have been living that philosophy to the fullest and I thought I'd illustrate with just two of my "suitcase" dresses. I've worn both of these dresses far more than three times since purchasing them--these are just the ways I've worn them since I've been in Europe (you will also note the repetition of shoes, my only bag, and so forth).

Party Socks
I spotted these bedazzled socks at Pixie Market and can not get them out of my head. They're by the tights-phenom Bebaroque and are unfortunately out of the budget I deem reasonable to spend on socks. So, instead I'm thinking about DIYing my own version...Random beads and sequins stitched into some little knit trouser socks like confetti? Yes, please!

An American In Paris Day One
They say Paris is best enjoyed on foot and I feel as if I have put that to the test my spending the entire day marching around until my feet cried 'no more!' although my eyes and spirits were ready for ever more sights. We walked slowly through Notre Dame which is stunning, but also just filled with the most glorious streaks of colored light from the stain glass windows. With a soft soprano singing "Ave Maria" in one of the alcoves, it was an especially numinous experience (despite the hordes of tourists with cameras, like myself...).
Here in Paris nearly every street corner seems to be an example of beautiful architecture. While my sister can educate you on the history of Haussmann's renovations, which had as many political as visual motivations, I merely like to pause and snap pictures of fountains and art-nouveau Metro signs.
The Seine was a lovely stroll at midday and early evening; lined with little booksellers and the water teeming with boats. I was particularly charmed by the love locks on the Pont des Arts bridge: by attaching an engraved/marked padlock to the side of the bridge the promise of everlasting love can be made. And if your lock came with a key, cast it into the Seine and your love is doubly secured.
Perhaps we should have saved a visit to Shakespeare and Company when we were feeling truly deprived of English characters, but it was still a delightful bookshop that you could easily disappear inside of for a week or two...
