When I meet or interact with new people they often ask, "so what city do you live in?" When I know they're trying to place me geographically I tell them what cities are nearby, by explain that I live in a little village. It's funny how default living in a city has become that to live somewhere more rural is almost seen as a foreign concept. I don't "go" somewhere to take pictures for the blog or find quiet bits of nature; I'm already there and most pictures are snapped a short walk from my home. I really like the quiet village life. We go to town hall meetings and get to know our neighbors. We can walk from our house to a beautiful park where each subtle change in season is visibly marked. There are hundreds more tractors than taxis that routinely drive past my front door and I'm ok with that. This year I've been thinking I accidentally fell into the slow life movement unintentionally. Sure some things in my life definitely still move quickly and I need to work on my addiction to both fast food and fast fashion, but on a day-to-day basis I want to enjoy things as they are in the moment. To be present in the moment and chase more quality time rather than more belongings or distractions. To appreciate the tree that blooms this week, but will already start to fade by the next...

DeleteIt's refreshing to hear you mention fast fashion and needing to wean off of it in a blog post! I love both clothes and fashion blogs, but this year I'm buying only ethically sourced clothing. The thought of fast fashion has been on my mind a lot as I read through blogs. The transition has definitely been difficult in some ways, but I love the way it's reframed my attitude about clothing.
ReplyDeleteHi Abbie, Yeah I don't want to get on a high horse about fast fashion when I still very much buy fast fashion--even if I try to re-wear and keep things for several seasons (years really)--I'm still purchasing from stores that aren't paying fair wages and are hurting the environment and so on. But it's definitely something I want to work on. Would love to get to a much cleaner closet one of these days...

A very beuatiful post. I can related it that the quiet village life is lovely, give peace inside. I live in a village. The one thing I envy you is your surrounding is so beautiful with all the trees and flowers. We have trees here but no flowers. Only a little of wild flowers.

Ah, I love this. I have also fallen in love with the slow life (accidentally...falling in love with a sweet farmer-boy and the country lifestyle came along with it) and I too try my best to shake my addictions to some of the old pieces of my city(ish) life...namely my vanities and my constant connection to my cell phone. I too find beauty on my front lawn, every day, and even more beauty when I take a 5 minute walk to the farthest field from the house. Now if only gainful employment was easier to find in the country these days.... <3 <3 <3

In years gone by, I used to read your blog religiously, but, as I've become more aware of the issues of consumerism and it's debilitating effect on our planet, I had moved away from most fashion blogs. It's really wonderful to hear you raising concerns about fast fashion and to know that you're interested in the slow living movement. We're experiencing huge cyclones here in NZ at the moment with horrific flooding. The effects of climate change are on our doorstep and it's all connected to overconsumption...so talking about issues like this is more important than ever.
