When the Frost is on the Punkin

punkin-10 punkin-8I haven't always loved autumn but in the last few years it has become my favorite season. Part of this is due to Thomas's enthusiasm for autumn; did you ever notice how someone else's passion for a subject can ignite your own interest? Now I take so much joy out of finding the quirkiest pumpkins and watching the leaves change--I don't even mind the cooler temperatures or shorter days. So when Lucy Stopes-Roe got in touch and asked me if I would like a wee custom charm, I knew exactly what I needed. Lucy Stopes-Roe makes the prettiest little sculptures and jewelry; I fell in love with her petite field mouse and wise barn owl, but my dream piece had to be a perfectly shaped little pumpkin. Lucy created the dreamiest charm with a curling stem and delicate little leaves--I'm blown away by the amount of detail in this piece. It also has the loveliest weight to it which helps it fall so prettily. If you also dream of a wee pumpkin necklace then you're in luck because this lovely piece is now available in her shop and if you use my code RebeccasPumpkin you can get an additional 10% off. It is cast in silver, finished by hand and you can choose your necklace length and the finishing (silver or plated 18 carat gold). punkin-33 punkin-16-side

The necklace only arrived a few days ago but I've been wearing it basically non-stop since then! It's just a perfect autumn charm for me; it's dainty so it goes with every outfit (so cute on cozy knits) and is ideal for layering with other pieces too. I suspect you'll be seeing it quite a bit this autumn as it creeps into every outfit. We took these pictures with some of the loveliest birches near our home and a few of the gourds from a friend's farm. Pumpkins aren't native to this region so there aren't many farmers who grow them, but in the last few years we've found more and more varieties at local farmshops and it's fun collecting all the different shapes and colors. Our front step is a veritable smorgasbord of pumpkins at the moment; white ones, orange ones, striped ones, ones with weird bumps and others in strange shapes. We don't really have anything else in the way of autumnal decor, but our pumpkin collection is quite lovely. punkin-34-side punkin-37 punkin-44"The strawstack in the medder, and the reaper in the shed;
The hosses in theyr stalls below—the clover over-head!—
O, it sets my hart a-clickin’ like the tickin’ of a clock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock!
Then your apples all is gethered, and the ones a feller keeps
Is poured around the celler-floor in red and yeller heaps;
And your cider-makin’ ’s over, and your wimmern-folks is through
With their mince and apple-butter, and theyr souse and saussage, too!
I don’t know how to tell it—but ef sich a thing could be
As the Angels wantin’ boardin’, and they’d call around on me—
I’d want to ’commodate ’em—all the whole-indurin’ flock—
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock!"
by James Whitcomb Riley punkin-23punkin-25-sideSolomon obviously came along for our photos. He's often in the background while we shoot having a nosey around or chasing a few squirrels (he never comes close to catching them). Towards the end he came down and lay down beside me--rolling around in the leaves a few times for good measure! I find it pretty amusing when I'm editing the photographs later to see where he crops up in the background. punkin-21
