There are dresses that while easy to throw on make you look and feel much more pulled together than the most complicated ensemble. Dresses that seem imbued with a certain charm that appeal to your spirit long before you've worn them enough to tie them to specific memories and significant events. Maybe these dresses don't even bring you compliments from strangers or a smile to your lips (smiles are overrated anyway), but still these dresses are special. You'll wear them until they fall to pieces and people tease you about how often they've seen you in them. They will go out of style, if they were ever in it, but it won't matter because their relation to culturally constructed concepts of style was never relevant to you. What makes certain dresses this way? I hardly know, but they're the sort of pieces I want to fill my wardrobe with.

I love that the text in between your pictures has become really "writerly" lately; sometimes it approaches prose-poetry. It makes such a welcome change from the usual cliches one finds on fashion blogs. I also love spotting the literary references in so many of your post titles. (Needless to say, your outfits are always wonderful).
ReplyDeleteThat is a perfect dress.
ReplyDeletebeautiful dress. I made one of a similar fabric (and possibly shape, if this is halterneck!) a few years ago and that's got some really special memories attached to it. the power of clothing..

I always love what you wear but I'm especially loving the bag today - of course I've seen it before but the detail of the pattern against the simplicity of the bird shapes is just so lovely I felt the need to let you know :D

I know the feeling! I find myself going back to the same dresses that look so pulled together without trying too hard, especially with work-appropriate dresses. It's so easy to throw on one piece and mix up the accessories to make it fresh. Love!

I would love to fill my wardrobe with dresses too. I was just talking to my boss last week about her dress (well, more like she was talking to me about it). She had on a 1950's style olive green button-down dress that she recently purchased, and was so amazed at the fact that it was the same style of dress that she wore back then.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had a bunch of dresses to fill my closet too. They're so easy to put on and instantly make you look put-together. I particularly love this one you're wearing. The color is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI love how sweet and pretty your style is--you always look lovely and put together without looking like you're trying too hard. My favorite elements are your quirky touches, whether they are fun rings, unusual headbands or interesting prints! I am traveling for the year and living out of my backpack (definitely function over form for me), so it's fun to escape into this fantasy world of pretty clothing once in awhile. :)
