Fine Feathers Make Fine Birds

I have always chosen the colors in my wardrobe based on what colors I like to look at rather than which ones I think look good on me. For starters, I'm not sure what colors I'm supposed to wear and then I also would just prefer to surround myself with things I find aesthetically pleasing--even if those things don't "suit" me. Purple used to be one of my least favorite colors, but with amethyst being my birthstone and the way it interacts with red hair, it's creeping into my wardrobe. This pretty printed dress might have been a tipping point; the feather print made me disregard the colors involved and once I had it on, it was instant infatuation. It's a fantastic dress for summer, but it will probably also look nice with layers this fall and yes--I think it looks nice with my hair. All that rambling to say: purple, not so bad and maybe soon to become a staple in my wardrobe.

  1. Purple flatters everyone - as long as you find the right shade. A nice deep eggplanty purple is probably one of the best for you! It looks great, I love the print.

  2. The way you feel about colors is the way I feel about certain silhouettes. I'll wear them even if I'm not particularly crazy about them just because it might be more flattering. But you're right, the coloring on this dress is perfect against your hair!

PS. "Fine feathers make fine birds" is where I got my blog title, but in French! (la belle plume fait le bel oiseau)

  4. I tend to over-analyze the whole color thing, too. But, I must admit that purple looks really great on you, especially with your hair.

    Lovely as usual...

  5. I've been a reader of yours for a couple months, and you always look great, but I find myself wishing you would change your look up more often. I get that this is your style and you wear what you like, but every outfit post tends to feature a dress with this same silhouette. The accessories help make them more interesting, yes, and they're lovely dresses, don't get me wrong. I just feel like I always know what to expect from your outfit posts. The last look before this one, with the red shorts, for example, was a really nice change. I know you occasionally feature shorts, or pants, or skirts, but with the amount of dresses you feature, all your looks tend to blend together for me. Just something to think about.

  6. I absolutely love the print of this dress! Looks great on you. I also love that you are (in terms of the typical fashion of today) "dresses up" but you still manage to look so causal. I'm still trying to perfect that ;)

  7. @Megan, I'm sorry to hear that because well, this is me making an effort! I mean, the shorts this week, 2 dresses of a different silhouette last week, separates & jeans the week before that, etc. Anyway, if you don't like my style or notice that effort then I’m sorry, but there isn’t much more I can do…
I would add though that the weather is 100+ degrees here, so summer style is bland for everyone. Things get more interesting fall when people can layer, play with color, and yes, shapes too. Options are limited right now and ultimately, I believe in wearing clothes that make you happy rather than ones that shock/excite/entertain...

  13. The dress isn't TERRIBLY purple, it looks like it's nice and dark and not that bright cheap looking purple I think of when I hear the word "purple".... and it does look nice with your hair!

  20. Rebecca,
I am sorry if I gave the impression that I didn't like your style because I really do! I have continued to follow your blog for that reason. And obviously it's your personal style blog so wear whatever you want to wear! I just think that you have such a great natural shape and beauty and could pull of a variety of clothes and colors and shapes and I've noticed you must just naturally gravitate toward dresses with this particular shape. I know it's hard to experiment a lot with clothes during summer, but I just wanted to encourage you to try items of clothing that you might not immediately go for when looking for something to wear (perhaps a maxi skirt/dress?) I wouldn't want you to wear something you don't like, of course, but I've just found that I like to try out pieces that aren't really my usual "go-to" style, because I often end up really liking them. Please don't take this offensively, it's your blog and your style, I really just think you would look great in anything and should definitely embrace that as much as you can.

  21. @Megan, no I don't take offense, but I do think it's important to allow people to have a signature. I mean too, I'm trying to show what I actually wear every day, rather than produce content inorganically or wear clothes just for the sake of photos.
I'm flattered you think I can pull anything off--I do not think so! And at 5'1" it's rather difficult to find maxi dresses that fit and midis make me look shorter, etc. I try not to dress too much to just flatter my figure, but I have a certain shape I like. As in: body-con dresses might look ok on me, but I don't enjoy the way they look on me, it isn't how I see myself...if that makes sense.
Anyway, I'm also not meaning to be argumentative with you! I think you have valid points, but I don't think things will really change much until fall & even then I don't know how much it will overall--but I am cutting my hair then so maybe it will inspire a whole new direction! :)

  22. I know your must hear this a lot, but your hair is beautiful! I was wondering if you dye it at all? I am a natural red head but I am looking to brighten it up a bit, and you basically have my dream hair color. :)

  23. @poop, thank you! I'm not naturally very bright red, so what I do is get it brightened. I can't be of much more help, b/c I go to a profressional, so I don't know what process is used really--I just point at a pic and say I want it to look close to that color. It's nice though b/c it's a non-damaging treatment, no bleaching, etc.

  24. aahh. I can see that your hair has been redyed. Very nice. Purple is fun to wear. you must be a February baby right? Anyway you look lovely and this dress is beautiful. I didn't know you responded to comments on your own blog. I never subscribe to comments on other blogs, and maybe i should do so. hmm.
