Among The Fallen Leaves

While my sister was in town we drove down old country roads passing half a dozen cemeteries and a frightening amount of dead deer, to Belmead-on-the-James. It was a bright, warm day; the sort that almost makes you forget winter is nearly here. The perfect sort of weather for taking a look around the old plantation turned school for African American and Native American students established by Katharine Drexel turned deteriorating historic grounds. The property once had more than 40 buildings with separate private schools for boys and girls, but now only three major buildings remain there. Oh if those walls could talk...
