Shorts Weather

On some of our snowiest days I have self-described my outfits as "looks like I'm wearing nothing under my coat--but I'm not!" to friends. I don't know what it is but when the snow looks especially heavy and I plan on walking a lot I'm loathe to put on something as impractical as a dress, but find constricting jeans equally unappealing and thus end up in a pair of shorts which disappear behind my coats. Comfort clothes mean different things to different people. I think I'll always feel most at home in a dress, but there's something about shorts with tights and some serious boots that make me feel ready to take on the world in a completely different way.

Outfit details:
UO hat (old)
combat boots (similar)
vintage Coach purse
UO mittens (old)

Love the outfit!
I've gotten more comfortable with showing more leg over the years, so I've also had the whole "looks like I'm not wearing anything under my coat" thing going on, too. :P

I'm so sick of wearing jeans, too! I think I'll have to wear shorts with tights soon ;) Thanks for the inspiration.

You look so lovely! I feel the same way about shorts with tights. I can't wait until it's cold enough here so I can start wearing them when I go out for bike rides.

The right shorts read somewhat like a miniskirt when worn with tights and boots. It works better on some people than others and it works really well on you.

Hey Rebecca,so I know you've said that you've accumulated your wardrobe through years of just buying dresses that will last for a long time. As a college student, I'm currently trying to do the same (now that I've sadly stopped growing at 5'1") and I was just wondering how often you would buy a dress or splurge on something? I was raised to always look for deals, meaning all of my clothes from my teenage years were pretty much under 10 dollars. But I now find myself wanting pieces that are more expensive than 10 dollars and I'm unsure how to gauge how much I'm spending compared to how much I should be spending. Do you have any advice?

@Abby, The first thing to do is to develop a budget--like what is your income (do you have a part-time job?) and what are your expenses. After your expenses, what do you have left? In college I worked as a cashier and every penny after I had taken care of the necessities was mine to spend or save. So it's not so much about the price of each item, but the amount I have that month. If the item I want is within budget then I can get it, but if it's more than I earned and would mean putting it on a credit card I wouldn't get it, but I also wouldn't spend what I did have right now but save that and add it with the next month's leftovers to maybe be enough. The focus shouldn't be the price of each item, but about staying within your budget.
That's how it is for me anyway--I never wanted to develop credit card debt and I would request more hours at my work or volunteers for shifts other people didn't want when I was trying to pull a bit more together. So I wasn't focused so much on the price of each item but rather the amount in my bank account.

I love a good shorts and tights outfit and this one definitely makes me want to break out my denim shorts and pair them with some polka dot tights. I wore a "looks like I'm wearing nothing under my coat" outfit yesterday. Shorts and tights are seriously comfortable. I really love the top you're wearing here too. You always look so cute!

I just wanted to comment on the Style Crush post on Ranna above this. I restarted reading your blog a few months ago. I first started reading it maybe 5 or 6 years ago - around the same time I was reading Only Shallow. I definitely had pictures of cute outfits from both of you saved in a "Fashion Inspiration" folder I lost with my old computer. Thank you for the trip down memory lane with your Style Crush post.
