Escapism: mental diversion by means of entertainment or recreation, as an "escape" from the perceived unpleasant or banal aspects of daily life. My blog offers escapism from the rural, unsocialized life that I lead. Online I can interact and live vicariously through hundreds of people. However, I'm beginning to believe that for the people who visit my blog they're experiencing the opposite. City-dwellers seeking some picturesque visuals of nature, perhaps?

Someone recently remarked that their favorite pictures recently are the ones where I'm at a profile, or my back is to the camera and I'm looking out across the water (there aren't any good examples in this set, sadly). Those are my favorite pictures as well, they're a little anonymous and it depicts a person absorbed in the scene. Whenever I see an image of someone's back in some idyllic setting, it is possible for me to superimpose myself into that image. If it's anonymous, it could be anyone, even a snapshot from your own personal history or memory; similar to how reading a novel in first-person can make you feel what that character feels...

  1. I guess I use this as an escape. I have similar landscapes where I live, but because of a 9 to 5 day job I'm unable to frollick around during the day and enjoy them as much as I'd like to. I'd love to sit on rocks by the water snapping photos!

  4. that dress is great, i love it!

i think too, about the pictures where you can't really see the face.. there's something about them that makes them seem more candid when you aren't looking in the camera. they're my favorite ones too :)

  8. Yes, I think for me it is the escapism coupled with the fantastic clothes! Visiting your blog I can pretend that yes, life really just is getting dressed pretty and hanging around beautiful lakes, oceans, forests. There is no laundry, dishes, diapering, work. ;-)

  9. I truly believe we always want what we don't have, as in the case of you wanting to experience city life and those in the concrete jungle wanting a taste of the great outdoors.

I live in a very, very rural area(no streetlights or stores) but can drive just an hour into center city Philly...both areas have their own pros and cons, of course, no place is perfect.

  11. Well the environment where you live is so different to mine, it's nice to escape a little in your beautiful photos.

I also love how your outfit perfectly matches all the different colour tones in the background.

  12. It's hard to believe you take these beautiful photos yourself. I love this outfit -- it's a perfect mix of new and old.

  13. I can't believe you take these beautiful photos yourself. I love your outfit. It looks so good on you -- such a nice combination of old and new.

  14. Yes that is definitely the case for me. I live nowhere near such sceneries that I see in your photos. Plus you are always able to capture their beauty through your own perspective, which makes me come back for more.

Great dress Rebecca, and I am still gaga over that hat. (:

  16. Hi there!
I just started following your blog a few weeks ago and I totally agree with this post. I'm from Canada where many of our traditional artists were Transcendentalists - finding solace and inspiration in nature. I love that you've done that too! These images have become very dear to my heart (and are constantly filling the "fashion inspiration" folder on my desktop!). It's great to see such peaceful, nature-filled images in the sometimes "cosmopolitan" world of fashion blogs.

    PS Your outfit is gorgeous!

  17. It's funny, becuase I actually live an extremely unsocialized and rural life...but I always imagine that you have this incredibly exciting life cause of all your beautiful outfits and photoshoots...so it's kind of nice to know that youdon't have to live in the city or something to have amazing style :)

  18. yay! Sand Dollars! and that hat... gets me every time!

I agree with the escapism thing but to me it's also inspiration seeing how and where other people live. I like all of your photos but will agree that the more anonymous ones strike a different sort of chord. Perhaps it is easier to put yourself into that space when you aren't as distracted by facial expressions and fashions?

  21. I always find your photos serene and intriguing, this set especially -- there's something terribly Victorian about this look (your hat?) and while I do also love the "anonymous" shots, I also love seeing your graceful and serene expressions, too....:)

    ReplyDelete
  22. this is a beauty, loooving that hat on you, the victorian look was made for you dahling. also, i was womndering how did you become a writer for chictopia/become a part of everyone is ugly??

  25. I've been thinking of a ring that would include a starfish for the past week or so, and it seems they turn up everywhere, presumably to encourage me. Right?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wow you look so Agatha Christie. I was reminded of the girl in "And then there were none" who drowns the little boy at sea. Vera, right? Yes, this shoot reminded me of her. Also, I've quite enjoyed your tumblring as of late. :-)

  27. your blog is definitely escapism for a city dweller previously from the country like myself. I actually used one of your beautiful trees reflecting in the lake shots as a desktop a few weeks ago

  46. you look wonderful! love your dress and shoes... i would love to wander around in the areas you take photos!

  47. This is such a fantastic set of photos. What you wrote about it also really interesting... that you escape your sometimes isolated and rural life by reading blogs, etc., but there are definitely people who read your blog as a form of escapism, too (as you suspect!!).

I love your black shiny shoes among the shining rocks... the gif photo is really charming. I see you took your photos on a typical day on the puget sound seaside. :)

  48. This is so beautiful, pretty all the way. I love the hat, it makes it all more interesting.

  53. I think this is one of my favorite outfits. Everything just goes together so well, and you look so classic and the tiniest bit old fashioned (but in such a good way!).

I read your blog for inspiration in my own outfits, and because I do love the scenery in your photos. I live in a rural area, but it's Kentucky rural, which is an entirely different sort of landscape than yours.

  54. Love the giant starfish photo! I totally agree with you, pictures of people walking away are some of my favorites. Your outfit fits so well in with your surroundings here. Well done.

  61. You always have such amazing outfits, and take such lovely pictures! I tend to think of your blog as half fashion, half art. Love it!

I also wanted to let you know about something unrelated, but awesome... TOMs Shoes (www.tomsshoes.com) is sponsoring One Day Without Shoes (www.onedaywithoutshoes.com) TOMORROW, April 8th. It is a day designated for everyone to go barefoot, to raise awareness about impoverished children who cannot afford the basic need of footwear. So if you, or any of your readers, could help spread the word and go barefoot tomorrow (be it for an hour or a few minutes or all day) it would be AMAZING!

Thanks so much in advance. I love your blog!
