Bringing back these images of Ruth St. Denis which I first shared in 2010. Every summer I sort of dream of becoming a woodland nymph with flowers in my hair and Ruth St. Denis really embodies that 1920s-meets-mystical-creature look for me. A little background in the dancer: Ruth St. Denis was a pioneer of modern dance known for her interests in exotic mysticism and spirituality. One of her major techniques was "music visualization." She founded a school with her husband in 1938; Martha Graham was one of her pupils.
For her, dancing was a very spiritual act and I think it shows in these images. There seems to be a sense of communion between her and nature. via NYPL
