After these pictures I realized how dissatisfied I was with this outfit. To analyze it in the literal/visual sense it is too busy for my tastes. I find fault in the two-tone accessories and the large print, but the trouble is greater than that. I try to keep my room uncluttered; I hang few pictures and rarely paint my walls, but much like my outfits which start simply and end hidden beneath accessories, things pile up. Vintage National Geographics litter the floor, bookshelves are crowded with as many heels as novels, and my nightstand is a veritable bazaar of discarded rings, necklaces, electronics, and books. This chaos is a better reflection of my true nature than any minimalistic outfit or bare-walled room, but the disorder only adds to my mind's hectic sprawl. My thoughts are always in a dozen places at once, rarely consumed by the present. I seek tranquil, empty landscapes to rest my head upon and try to dress my body in uncomplicated, sweet pieces that might counterbalance my nature. My eyes grow tired from too many points of stimulation and I do not need to wear my restless mind on my sleeve...

Although it is a "busy" outfit, I really do love it. I think everything works very nicely. It is such a summery outfit, which I love. The pattern of the dress is very tropical.

You look really cute, I love it! =)
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's busy at all. You don't have layers upon layers, and you're not drowning in metal accessories, long earrings and tons of rings.
ReplyDeleteI think it's simple and tasteful.
How you describe your "life's hectic sprawl" and how it relates to your mind... it's a lot like me.
I wonder how else you and I are alike?
Less than four months till our relocation to your old home Island. I'm so excited!

I love the back of that dress. And even if you didn't end up liking your outfit (although I still think you look stunning) I think that's the great thing about blogging. you get to really take a look at yourself and introspective think about things like you talked about.
ReplyDeleteWonderful!

What? I thought this outfit was awesome. Especially because of the two-tone accessories and busy print.
ReplyDeleteThe rest of your text I could have written myself. I never buy ornaments, the most I want is a vase of flowers. But I'm currently sitting in the midst of a veritable maelstrom of papers and clothes and odds and ends. I guess that's what tidying up is for... ; )
Really love the Rebecca Minkoff bag. =)

The back of the dress is great. I love how you show off your tattoos :)

I think the busy makes it pretty! It has a lot of life in it, which I think that is important for an outfit to have. You look darling in it!

I actually thought this was a calm and relaxed outfit. Not so busy at all. The hat, the shoes and the bag did match each other quite good and sure, maybe the print was a little strong, but it just add character to the entire outfit I think.
ReplyDeleteI quite like this outfit!
ReplyDeleteMy room, like yours, is very simple, a light color, many candles, yet full of drawers of records, of vintage knick-knacks, of polaroids.
The simplicity is there in the cut of the dress, and the print just adds extra little something.
the cut out on the back is nice
ReplyDeleteI swear I just saw a glossy magazine just tweet about how big hawaiian prints are coming back too.
ReplyDeleteI feel like you about the jewelry most times, it some times feels like too much!
How perfect is that dress next to those pink blooms?

I understand your way of thinking, but I love this outfit. The two-toned accessories doesn't spoil it a bit. It's all about finding a perfect balance between chaos and order.

What do you mean, busy? You mean how many details are in each piece? But that's what makes a complex, beautiful outfit.
ReplyDeleteEven though this is a busy outfit for you, I like that the accessories go well together. The silhouette is so pretty on you, and I like the print -- seems like a nice nod to your old Hawaiian life :)
ReplyDeleteI love every type o hats!
ReplyDeleteSo yours too!

ReplyDeleteI love that print, very summery without being very obvious.

what a beautiful dress, lovely back cut
ReplyDeleteEven if you're not a huge fan of the outfit - I think you still look radiant and stunning! :)

Well I love this outfit. I can see what you are saying about the two tones accessories and maybe the bag was what was bothering you most, but I think it's still a great look.
ReplyDeleteAnd I've heard the the more cluttered our spaces our, the more creative and intelligent we are. So consider it a blessing in disguise:)
I completely understand what you mean by the outfit, the hat and the bag for me jar in a way that your outfits normally don't.
ReplyDeleteMay I say that I really enjoy posts of yours like this, that are a bit more questioning and uncertain.
This is great! You're adorable.
ReplyDeleteI think this dress looks wonderful on you! The back is super cool and so is the pretty print on it. It's not busy at all! I love the hat you paired with it and those amazing heels too
ReplyDeleteAlthough it might be busy compared to some of your other outfits, I think that it works. The accessories are all very cohesive and you look wonderful nonetheless. I hate the feeling of being uncomfortable with something I've set out to wear, though.
ReplyDeletecertainly wouldn't mind that dress for myself. :)But I do have difficulty with wearing the cutout-back dresses casually, don't you?
ReplyDelete@paper hero, no, why would it be an issue? I mean, the fabric of the dress is casual; it's lightweight & not fancy, so I can't imagine wearing it an any fashion other than casual. Also I don't think the middle of my back is especially provocative & it's 90+ degrees, so even with a cut-out I'm more covered up than 75% of people I see. Ultimately, I'm simply comfortable in these clothes.
ReplyDeleteWhy wouldn't you wear them casually?
i LOOOOVE your clogs!!!!
ReplyDeletemaybe i am remembering incorrectly, but didn't you wear this dress before, and comment that you had bought it at a tourist shop in hawaii? or is that just a similar-looking dress?
ReplyDelete@Anonoymous, nope. I wrote about how the hibiscus print reminded me of Hawaii, you can see the post here: http://theclothes.blogspot.com/2011/05/hibiscus-hideaway.html
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have any clothes from a tourist shop in Hawaii. :(
i see. i must have it confused with a different blogger or something. sorry!
ReplyDelete@Anonymous, no worries. I love Hawaii, but when I lived there I didn't do much shopping at tourist shops. Ala Moana Center was my favorite haunt. :)
