Outfit: Movie Night at the Strand

I'm always going on about my love of old movies, but did I ever mention I love old movie theaters too? An old theater with classic red velvet curtains and old-fashioned marquee out front sort of begs for you to dress up and bring some of the ceremony back to a movie night. One of my favorite vintage photographs is from the first 3-D movie; the men are wearing suits and ties, the women look like movie stars with their perfectly coiffed hair. Naturally I do go to the movies in jeans sometimes, but whenever I do take the time to put together a special going-out outfit there's so much added ceremony and fun to the night (and what could be more fitting than a popcorn purse and ticket print dress?). And there's a theater in Belfast that ticks all of the boxes for the perfect night--down to old Hollywood themed popcorn bags and carpet--the Strand Arts Centre. First opened in 1935 it is the oldest cinema in Northern Ireland and shows a mix of current films and classics (I'm keen to book tickets for the Princess Bride screening in April). Its distinctive Art Deco designs make it hard to resist snapping a few pictures on your way in. Once inside, settle back in your plush red seat and let the movies take you away for a couple of hours until it is time to emerge, a little dazed to trip past the glowing neon lights...

  6. I want to know how you get such beautiful shots all the time where it looks like you're the only girl in her own vintage dreamworld! Did Thomas take these? Did you guys bribe the theatre employees to let you stay after closing for pics? I suppose it's all a mystery :)

    1. Hi Chloe, Yep Thomas took these pictures and no big mystery--we got permission to take pictures in the theater between showings so we were all alone! :)

  7. Love the theatre and your outfit...it's perfect! There used to be a really old cinema in my city but sadly it closed down. I wish we could preserve more old buildings like these or even bring some back!

    1. That is so sad! There was a photographer documenting old abandoned cinemas in the States and it was so sad that such beautiful buildings are going to waste.

  8. This looks gorgeous. I'm also totally behind getting dressed up when it's not particularly called for. Oscar Wilde once said "you can never be over educated or over-dressed" and that's my motto.

  11. Wow, I've never seen the Strand look so good! Your photos have captured details that I have missed in the past - for example the awesome floor in the foyer! What a perfect dress and bag for the occasion.
