Have you heard of Tasha Tudor before? She was an illustrator and children's book author who illustrated nearly 100 books. While clearly prolific in her field, what she is often remembered for today is as a lifestyle and fashion inspiration. Even one of my favorite brands (Doen) cited Tasha Tudor as an inspiration for their recent collection. She lived in the Vermont countryside at a sprawling farm and dressed in styles from the 19th century that she made herself. She kept goats, chickens, and corgis and nurtured a sprawling garden that looks straight out of a fairytale. While she only passed away in 2008, it's easy to feel as if the pictures captured of her at home could have been taken in another century. They invite us to take life at a slower pace; to sip a cup of tea and knit a scarf. For all that she looks quite traditional, in many ways she was a rebel who carved out her own corner of the world in the style she desired--she didn't wear modern clothes or own a television, she carried her groceries in a handwoven basket and would use her goats as an excuse to leave parties early. We often think of rebels as those who burn loud and bright, but I like this kind of quiet rebel. The person who knows what they want in life and finds a way to live it. She makes me dream of a future home with a large garden and pet goats; of a warm kitchen with dried flowers hanging from the ceiling and evenings spent barefoot on the porch listening to birdsong while weaving seasonal wreaths.
When I was little my favorite protagonists in books were always girls with red hair and it felt inevitable that when I was finally allowed to dye my hair I went red. Not much has changed either because now many of my favorite bloggers are also redheads! I really like the way copper-y hair interacts with clothing colors and they keep me inspired to keeping dyeing. Point being, this week's style crush is Katy of Wit and Bloom. She's a teacher for children with Autism, a flower crown maker, and the occasional freelance model and blogger. Katy lives in Florida so her blog posts tend to be the ultimate summer wardrobe inspiration. For more visit her blog.
I'm revamping my "style crush" posts from long-format posts trying to cover as much of a person's style as possible to shorter posts featuring one or two looks from a blogger or photographer I admire. Anyway, the "style crush" posts will continue to inspire Friday evenings and today I'm recapping a few of my favorite style crush posts from the past year or so. Click on the name to be directed to the original post filled with loads of visual inspiration from each lady.
The pictures really say it all. When I think of high ponytails finished with bows and winged cat eyeliner it is often Catherine Devenuve that comes to mind. I love her style from the 60s the most and this is heavily influenced by the characters she played in movies as much as her off-screen style. Umbrellas of Cherbourg might not be my favorite musical, but the style was swoon-worthy (and I will make an homage post one day!).
This week's style crush is largely about the hair. Irene Kim is a Korean model who's been making waves at NYFW on and off the runway. Her street style is eclectic and interesting--like admire how ladylike she makes a fur puffer jacket look with shiny flats and her ability to pull off more masculine looks in an oversized coat and black fedora. But yes, it is her frequently changing rainbow-tipped hair I really covet. The purple was ethereal and right now her tips are mostly blue and green with a touch of orange and yellow in the back...
Former model Hanneli currently focuses on styling and photography as a Vogue contributor, but it is her street-wear that has brought her the most fame. While many of Hanneli's more outlandish looks are aided by her model figure, you can't claim she isn't adventurous when it comes to fashion. It is her flair for the dramatic that makes her a street style photographer favorite--from straight off the runway outfits to her penchant for bicycling and skate boarding between shows she is a photographers dream making city streets look editorial worthy. While I love her ability to go from pretty and retro to avant-gurde at the drop of a hat, it is her layering skills and lust worthy coat collection I'm paying especially attention to lately.
Hi! Welcome to my dusty, wee corner of the Internet. What started as a fashion blog has now become a window into the wild and a way to share a moment of calm and quiet.
