Where Time Hovers Ghostlike

I certainly feel as if I could be in some mystery novel when I meandering through the moat wall. It's such a curious space that seems to belong more to a story than reality. With the sun bouncing off the water outside and casting ghostlike patterns on the ceiling and walls there's an added surreal quality to the space.

Saturday Remix

My absolute favorite purchase in 2010 has to be this Triptych dress which I got at The Olive Shoppe. It's a perfect example of my style: classic lines, but with a quirky/off-beat detail (in this case the growling panther). I've worn it many, many times and always a little different. I think that is the key to stretching your wardrobe: don't be afraid to repeat pieces, but don't forget to be creative when you do! Here's a sampling of how I've worn the dress in the past year.

Pre-Fall 2011
The Pre-Fall collections have been bursting forth lately and it's all quite inspiring...I mean the whole purpose of Pre-Fall does seem to be for designers and retailers to make more money, but they do provide some new ideas (or remind us of old ones; right now I'm glad for the number of skinny belts I have lying around). These are a few of my favorite pieces and collections this season.

When The Ocean Meets The Sky

I find grey days like this one quite fascinating. At heart I would love everyday to be summer and to sit on my front porch drinking lemonade, but variety is what makes life interesting...and there's something very fascinating about days where the separation between ocean and sky is nearly invisible. It's almost as if you could dive into either and disappear into somewhere else entirely.

More Than Lace And Ribbon

The cold weather lately is making me never want to venture outside again, but I must admit it's nice the way the chilly temperatures keep my favorite places to go walking pleasantly empty. I imagine in the summer these beaches and pathways will be populated and I'll have to find some other place to wander for solitude...

I bought this buffalo plaid dress while I was in Japan on a bit of a whim; it was cute and cheap, so why not? It's definitely one of those pieces that has really been worn to bits in the past four years! I find it so versatile and the lightweight material makes it perfect for layering. I think anyone looking for a great clothing item to remix: a shirt dress is a good place to start.

The Apartment

If there was ever a film that served as a warning against corporate life and a few other so-called American ideals from the “golden age” of history which people are want to remember overly fondly, it is The Apartment. Comedic actors Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine decidedly lighten the bleak portrait of then-contemporary society painted by writer and producer Billy Wilder.
At first glance the film seems to revere patriarchal ideology and capitalist work ethic, but the method of success seems solely to be prostitution of one’s self and exploitation of others. Lemmon loans his apartment to his superiors who use his bachelor pad to entertain their mistresses. MacLaine is the quirky and witty elevator operator who always falls for the wrong man; this time it’s a scoundrel higher-up with the perfect family in the suburbs (played by Fred MacMurray). Lemmon begins to climb the corporate ladder, but sink ever lower in self-respect.
The entire movie plays with comedy and drama, light and dark. The somber tale of Lemmon’s character’s suicide attempt with a gun is lightened by his offer to show MacLaine the scar and she refuses saying, “the fellows in the office might get the wrong idea about how I found out.” We shake our heads at Lemmon’s weakness as he can’t seem to say no, but then cheer his moments of strength; we are never made entirely cynical.
In the end, the characters only manage to morally rise above their situations by escaping the firm in which they both work. Their boss, the perfect example of corporate success, maintains his position of power and control. The message is clear: you can lead a moral, happy life, just not in the corporate world.

It's Better To Help People Than Garden Gnomes

-the way the world looks through rosy sunglasses

Tick Tock Time To Party

What type of party is it?
a dinner party! after we're done eating, we'll make a bonfire and toast marshmallows and dance the night away.
Who's invited?
Who's invited?
dolly parton, francoise hardy, mary poppins, audrey tautou, ABBA, chris conley, hugh grant, ina garten, old friends, new friends, and you!
bryan and i would be cuddled up next to the fire; he'd be finishing up his bourbon, and i'd be finishing off the rest of the ice cream.
Where does it take place?

on the grounds of an 18th century estate; there's lots of string lights and candles, and we'll all eat at long tables.
What are you serving?
What are you serving?
ina decided that she'd take care of cocktails and hors d'oeuvres (i couldn't decline), and brought mint juleps, pimm's cups and a whole spread of cheeses. for dinner, we're having barbecue! there's pulled pork, cedar smoked salmon, potato salads, and jalapeno cornbread. if you've finished all your dinner, there's ice cream sundaes for dessert (with a full toppings bar, of course).
Who gets to sit next to you? my man would take the spot to my right because we come as a pair. mary poppins is on the left; i simply must know how she fit all of her belongings into that tiny bag.

What is the theme or what is everyone wearing?

originally, there wasn't going to be a theme but dolly complained. i obliged and asked everyone to wear some sort of costume, but gave no other specifics. mary poppins dressed as a cupid, francoise was disguied as charlie chaplin, and hugh was in drag.
Is there special entertainment?
Is there special entertainment?
during dinner, a local bluegrass band played. dancing music was a mix of 60's pop, 90's hip-hop, and a whole lot of new order. after one too many pimm's cups, chris conley convinced ABBA to finish off the night with 'take a chance on me'.
Are there any party favors?
Are there any party favors?
in lieu of favors, we set up a photobooth with more props than you could ever ask for. everyone took home their favorite photos from the night.

What are the hot topics of the evening?

dolly spent much of the night questioning hugh about his exceptional make-up application, while the rest of us placed bets on how long his wig would stay on (audrey won with her guess of exactly 9:24 pm).
Who is the most likely to get drunk and dance on the table?
